The Highlands County School District offers a standard curriculum in grades K-12, as well as programs in music, art, drama, physical education and computer skills. All schools are accredited by the Southern Association of Schools. There are also programs for the handicapped and vocational fields. Each school has one or more parent support groups. An Exceptional Student Program serves the needs of students encompassing a full range of abilities. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program is available in Highlands County School System.
Four public schools serve the Lake Placid, FL area. Lake Country Elementary, Lake Placid Elementary, Lake Placid Middle School, and Lake Placid High School are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The public school system is governed by the Highlands County School Board located in Sebring. Five members are elected to serve four-year terms.
